On some occasions, an internal HDD will need replacing on a unit. Replacing the drive itself is relatively simple, just remove the original screws and connections (Power and SATA) from the original drive and replace with the new drive. However, there are some points to be aware of below:
- CCTV requires the HDD to be constantly in use unlike a computer, cheaper hard drives with a lower read/write lifespan may fail much quicker than they would in a PC, we would always recommend using a drive that is designed for security such as western digital purple. Please check with your supplier before purchase that it is suitable for this.
- Replacing or removing the HDD requires breaking the tamper seal on the unit, if the unit is in warranty please contact support to obtain an authorisation number before as this will affect your warranty. This is only available to account holders if you are not an account holder you will need to contact your installer or supplier to obtain this for you or install the HDD for you, which we would always recommend.
- Ensure the unit is completely depowered when performing a swap.
- Some units are limited to the size of HDD they can support, please ensure you check what your unit can support before purchasing a new drive if it is bigger than the previous.
- Check that your unit has no specific requirements for HDDs before purchasing. For example, a λ | Cortex unit requires all HDDs to be of the same size.
- Any replacement HDD purchased from a 3rd party is not part of the unit's warranty. If this fails you will need to return to the point of purchase.
